Shriver’s Cleverness I Walked with Heroes

Being clever can at times save you from situations and scenarios where danger seems inevitable. And for soldiers in the militia, cleverness is perhaps their biggest weapon, maybe even bogger than the ones that they carry on their shoulders. The author Jerry Guzzetta in his book I Walked with Heroes explains the cleverness, and the presence of mind that was shown by Shriver to ensure a safe return from the enemy’s den.

The segment opens up with Shriver leading the troops in a mission. The clever man always carried an old Montagnard with him, this helped him navigate many of the enemy’s places with ease as someone local from their land would come up to save them. The cleverness of Shriver was visible when he started throwing rocks in the time when nothing can be seen, and his group of six men was walking deep into the enemy’s area. With this move of throwing rocks at the barren land, it allowed him and the rest of his squad to pass through the enemy’s zone, allowing them to safely reach their place and call for an attack on them later.

One incident happened during this, as someone from the enemy army who was sleeping woke up during Shriver and his squad’s walk in their den. Things could’ve turned the other way around, with the presence of an old Montagnard, the soldier was quickly back to sleep again. This incident, and the presence of a Montagnard in the squad at that moment saved them from the enemy’s wrath and attack. After the successful navigation of that place, Shriver and his men ran towards the safe zone, and ordered for an airstrike in the first light. This move, proved to be extraordinary show of resilience and sheer presence of mind from the soldier Shriver.

The book I Walked with Heroes written by Jerry Guzzetta explains the bravery, resilience and cleverness of soldiers who fought for their country. The book is filled with many of these incidents where resilience and grit are shown, and ultimate sacrifice for the country is made.
