My First Mission I Walked with Heroes
In the book I
Walked with Heroes, the author Jerry Guzzetta recounts about his
experiences and witnessing a conflict unfold in front of him during the Vietnam
War. The book not only uncovers the harsh realities of a grueling conflict, but
also portrays the grit and resilience that was shown by the American militia
during the conflict, protecting their freedom till the last drop of blood.
This particular
section speaks about Guzzetta’s first mission after being commissioned in the
U.S military. Guzzetta, the author of the book, meticulously explains the
details of his first assignment after being inducted in the military.
The Mission in Laos
After being
admitted in the U.S military, the author Jerry Guzzetta explains that the first
mission he was assigned to was in Laos, a country bordering Vietnam under the
supervision of Sgt. John Plaster. The mission itself had complications much
like every other military operation, and it taught the author a whole lot of
things related to military’s conduct.
The Insertion, and Learnings
The initial
insertion into the battleground allowed the author Jerry Guzzetta to quickly
get to know about the complications of moving while in the battle field. Moving
around, or free-flow movement just like a regular guy wasn’t an option as any
inconvenience could have led to a vital combat. The movement was taught to him
by Sgt. Plaster. The author also describes the environment of this particular
operation, where he was moving in a water body with utter silence at dawn,
teaching him the importance of precision while being in uniform.
Moving Ahead with Fear
As the narrative
moves further, the author describes being fearful during the mission, and
explained how his fear in that situation led him to think properly, and
function in a precise way. The sense of danger that was upon the squad’s head
was enabling them to take every step, and make every move with ultimate
precision.
The Encounter
The segment then
moves towards the encounter where the U.S military soldiers had an encounter
with the NVA forces. This particular moment is described perfectly by the
writer in the book, as it was the first instance in his military career where
he was encountering, or seeing an enemy in front of him. The author describes
his fear, and committing a blunder in the midst of these tensions where he was
standing up to signal a spotter, which depicts the amount of pressure he had on
his mind. This segment also recounts the mistake the squad made in general,
where they heavily underestimated the enemy’s skill, and made a few mistakes
while being on the ground.
The book I
Walked with Heroes written by Jerry Guzzetta tries to explore the broader
meaning of a conflict, a young boy’s fear after being admitted in the military
and other aspects of war that often remain undisclosed. The tale of wars and
conflicts is available for purchase on Amazon for readers from all across the globe.
