The Untold Stories of Vietnam: I Walked with Heroes
The
Vietnam War is often remembered for its battles and political controversies,
but underneath that, there’s a lot to look into it. With a plethora of personal
accounts covered in the book I Walked with Heroes by Jerry A. Guzzetta,
it aims to bring in the different picture of a grueling conflict, where
friendships and bond was created by someone who was thought to be an enemy.
Imagine a
soldier in the midst of a conflict is resting against the wall, and sharing a
sip of wine with the village’s oldest guy named Ghun, sounds unreal at first,
but the author Guzzetta is an example of that. The writer recalls these
moments, where he was seen sharing a drink with old guy during a deadly
conflict amidst the humidity and thick air in Montagnard.
The
experience as shared by the author describes and reflects on the overlooked
story from a war-zone, where the villager Ghun’s wisdom reveals the struggles
of his people i.e. Montagnard and fighting a war that was never theirs. This
interaction between the two takes a reader deep into the cultural heritage and
norms of the native Montagnard people, and their ultimate struggle for freedom.
The writer meticulously highlights the connection between the two in a short
span of time.
The
narrative outlines the strategic learnings Guzzetta got from these
interactions. The landscape of the Cambodian village as depicted by the author
had a hidden treasure that played a pivotal role in the conflict. The web of
supply routes, and the numerous hidden bases such as the BA-353 emerge in front
of the military personnel from the U.S and showcasing how this land serves as
the lifeline for the North Vietnamese Force. The soldier highlighted this
jungle war to be the best part of the whole conflict. As the complexities of
the war unfold, the author then encounters with Jerry Shriver, a personality
seemingly larger than life. His bravery, and unconventional support to combat
made him a character to look forward and fantasize. He becomes the epitome of
resilience and grit for Guzzetta and his men to draw inspiration. The
companionship among the military men during these times is also outlined
perfectly by the author.
The story
is turned to be even more compelling and intriguing with its authenticity as it
comes from a first-hand witness to the chaos in the war in Vietnam. The book
follows the other side of the war which transcends beyond any political
narrative, and delves deep into the heart. The story not only recounts the
incidents happened there. Bybut also highlights the sacrifices the author, and
his comrade made to ensure that the Montagnard are free from all the fears.
For those
