The POW in Vietnam I Walked with Heroes
The book I
Walked with Heroes written by Jerry A. Guzzetta is an outstanding
tale that is based on realities of battlegrounds. The author, a war veteran
himself, explains in details his, and the experiences of his comrade to portray
the actual events from the perspective of survivors, and fighters. The author aims
to bring down the often-glorified image of wars, and conflicts, and present the
reality and its dark side.
This
particular segment of the book discovers the controversy of POW (Prisoners of
War) in Vietnam, and discusses about the conversation a close aide had with the
then-President of the United States of America. The author opened the segment
with a phrase “No man left behind”, and emphasized that it should be reframed
to “No man left behind anymore” which outlined the fact that many of American
soldiers were still left behind in Vietnam. This was another sad reality in the
context of this war, as the government was trying to build a perception of all
the men returning back safely, yet the reality suggested something else. The aide disclosed that the president had
admitted of several hundred U.S men being left behind in Vietnam as of 1988,
with the President also suggesting that the survivors have now built a new life
there with villagers and locals, and don’t really see the Government
interfering, a claim which rose numerous eyebrows regarding government’s
policies and transparency regarding the prisoners of war. Robert Garwood, a
former Prisoner of War also entered the scene and claimed that he knows about
the U.S citizens in Vietnam. This sparked a debate, and caused a controversy
related to the government’s stance on POW. The book takes us deep into the
historical narrative of the Vietnam war, and what the author, a veteran, and
his comrade came across. Describing all the details meticulously, the book
shares valuable insights on the journey of American soldiers, their families
and the general public during the Vietnam War.
