I Walked with Heroes: Worrying About the Wrong Son
I
Walked with Heroes
by Jerry A. Guzzetta is an outstanding tale that delves deep into the struggles
and sacrifices the narrator, and other heroes of the war went during their time
in Vietnam. The story flips the coin and explores the dark side of conflicts,
and tells how it can negatively impact the individuals and their families. The
author also pays his homage to the veterans of war, who lived and died for the
country.
This
particular section of the book talks about the narrator’s mother, and her
rather obvious reactions when she found out about Guzzetta Jr. being appointed
to serve in Vietnam. The author explains that no one in his family initially
supported him when he decided to join the armed forces. He vividly recounts
their reaction when they found out about his training at the Green Beret,
something most of the people never knew until a famous film portrayed it. The
author, followed his heart and joined the military leading his mother to be constantly
concerned about his well-being in a war-zone like Vietnam, accounting for the
moment when she handed over a set of cards for him to send back home as a sign
of his well-being. The narrative then moves to his brother, Anthony. Anthony as
penned by the narrator was a very attractive, and a girl’s favorite guy. His
ability to attract women to himself once led to the brothers not speaking to
each other, when Anthony slept with Jerry’s fiancé.
Narrator
also outlines a time when Anthony helped him get over a girl he had dearly
loved, depicting the bond between the brothers. Unfortunately, Anthony was
murdered by a guy named Harold Lamar Watson, due to a small disagreement. This
incident rightfully shattered the whole family, as Guzzetta remembers his
father not smiling the way he used to, showing signs of grief, and his mother
looking to find Anthony everywhere around her in hopes that his bright smile
and shining personality would be visible to her somewhere. The grief with his
mother was deepened that she almost forgot about his other son serving in
Vietnam under much harsh conditions. As the author calls it in the end
“Worrying about the wrong sons”
